You may have read on our website about a way of treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) called Gut Directed Hypnotherapy. Do you want to learn more?
This blog will look at the history of Gut Directed Hypnotherapy and give you an insight in to this very successful treatment developed for IBS.
With one in five of the adult population in Britain suffering from IBS it is a huge problem. People experience a wide range of distressing symptoms including diarrhoea, pain and bloating. IBS sufferers can find their quality of life seriously affected, as the condition can be very debilitating. It is even more challenging as finding an effective treatment can often be very difficult.
Professor Peter Whorwell, Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology at the University Hospital of South Manchester, began looking at how Gut Directed Hypnotherapy could help people suffering with IBS over 20 years ago. Initially his results were met with scepticism. Unfortunately this is often the case with ‘hypnosis’ related treatments due to the preconceived notion of stage magicians using hypnosis for entertainment. However his on-going research has demonstrated a success rate of over 70% with patients showing improvements to a wide range of symptoms and remaining pain free for up to two years.
The concept of Gut Directed Hypnotherapy is to enable the patient to learn how to influence and control how their gut works. The brain is then able to modulate their gut activity. Treatment usually consists of hourly sessions with a suitably trained therapist. Since IBS affects everyone differently a programme is tailored to fit each individual. Sessions comprise of face to faces consultations and reinforcement at home with recordings.
If you suffer from IBS and feel this form of therapy may be of interest please contact me for a consultation. Prior to your consultation you will be asked to fill in and return a comprehensive diet and lifestyle questionnaire and we will work together to build a programme designed to address your individual symptoms.
